NYFW SS24 WHAT ARE YOU WEARING? SUSTAINABLE GUEST EDITION

By: Janice Ronan

The streets of the concrete jungle served as the perfect fashion insiders’ playground during the Spring Summer ’24 season of New York Fashion Week (NYFW SS24).

As the fashion faithful converged, over 300 runways that make up NYFW were set ablaze with next year’s key trends and wardrobe must-haves. While we all look to the shows for inspiration, some of the best style and creative vision comes from the industry insiders sitting on the sidelines. It is not just a sneak peek at what is en vogue, it is an infinite parade of styling choices in one big masterclass.

The week unfolded as a sustainable style spectacle, where the industry, including designers, writers, stylists, influencers, content creators and celebrities, joined hands to support environmental consciousness. Beyond fleeting trends and seasonal shifts, sustainability emerged as a powerful movement. Eco-friendly materials, ethical practices, and responsible choices took to the catwalks and to the streets, proving that fashion's future is intrinsically tied to a commitment to our planet.

Street Style in New York City (NYC), has always been a mixture of high-end, vintage, and thrifted pieces, creating a variety of coveted styles. Whether you like bold and unique looks or prefer a simple elegance, everyone can express themselves. NYC encourages individuality, making it a place where you can be yourself and stand out.

Today, avant-garde street style is not just about making a statement; it is a conscious choice to promote eco-friendly fashion. Ensembles are crafted from sustainable materials, vintage finds given new life, and pieces from eco-conscious brands. These are a few of our favorite stylish moments from NYFW, a captivating fusion of style and conscience, proving that eco-friendly fashion is not just a passing trend but a transformative movement that is here to stay.

Everyone’s favorite viral influencer, 12-year-old Tika the Iggy who has over 1 million followers on Instagram and who happens to be a dog, sat front row, VIP in a custom outfit at the Melke show. Melke is committed to building a brand that is all-natural, environmentally friendly, and plastic-free.

Cassandra Pinto, Vogue Fashion Editor and Author is in protest to her former Olympic sport dedication to the acquisition of fashion, she has halted all shopping for one year. She has launched the Consumption Project, a resource and community for people who love fashion but want to reject the more-is-more shopping philosophy.

Artist Jenny Walton returned to the classics and was all about the vintage pieces this season. She was striking in a vintage yellow trench coat paired with a vintage speedy bag from Louis Vuitton. As speedy bags are fan favorites, she personalized the look by adorning vintage key chains from her own personal collection.

Author, Fashion Editor and Stylist, Caroline Vazzana is a definite fashion force who has a closet full of vintage treasures. She has an incredibly unique style and loves to pair high-end luxury pieces with thrifted and vintage finds. She was glorious in green at NYFW in a skirt and top combo by AKNVAS paired with a vintage Chanel bag. She was also spotted dressed in eco-friendly brand, MELKE.

NYFW's sustainable focus offers a valuable lesson for us all. We can all adopt eco-friendly choices when event dressing. By opting to go the vintage or second-hand route, choosing eco-friendly materials, and supporting ethical brands, we reduce our fashion footprint. Shopping from our own closets, repurposing, and mixing and matching existing pieces can create stylish, planet friendly outfits. Even renting formal attire for one-time events reduces overconsumption. Dressing sustainably not only highlights our personal style but also promotes a more responsible and conscious approach, making every day a chance to be fashionably green, it is not just a trend, it is a movement.
