HOW RESIDIUS IS ENABLING PEOPLE TO DO FASHION WITH CLARITY

By Zibah Olabode

Conscious consumers are much more curious about the companies they support and the products they purchase. The fashion industry may have an surface reputation full of glamour but behind the scenes it can be somewhat of a shock to learn more about the origins and ethical practices of where and how things were made. Around fifty percent of major fashion brands disclose little to no information about their supply chain and only twelve percent of brands provide information about their raw material suppliers.

According to the Fashion Transparency Index, only fourty-eight percent of major fashion brands disclose their first-tier manufacturers, while a mere eleven percent map their entire supply chain to the raw material sourcing stage (tier four), which highlights a significant lack of transparency in the industry.

Despite the low transparency of fashion brands, the majority of consumers desire more information about the origins and ethical practices behind their clothing.

In 2017, Elin Mohlander was tired of the lack of transparency in the fashion industry, so she decided to create an uncompromising clothing line with a vision to create ethical, sustainable and long-lasting garments.

The brand she created, Residus is in line with her desire for complete transparency, a brand whose supply chain is an open book that welcomes anyone who may be interested in reading it.

Residus is clear and unchanging about their commitment to transparency and traceability, but they do not want their customers to just take their words for it, they encourage their customers to scan a QR code on their garments in order to decide for themselves if they are sustainable or not.

In their own words. “We understand that conscious consumers want to know where their clothing comes from. That’s why Residus is committed to full transparency and traceability. We provide information about the origins of our materials and production processes, so you can make informed choices about the products you wear”.

Their transparency extends to the information they provide about the materials they use to create their collections, their production, packaging and sourcing process and all the end-to-end processes in their supply chain.

The brand is intentional about their mission to create eco-conscious designs, through ethical production processes and in a way that is environmentally responsible and engages the community.

With an emphasis on timeless designs, exceptional quality, versatility and clothing that is tailored for comfort, Residus is making it clear that their creations are more than just clothing; they are a statement of their unwavering commitment to sustainability, style, and conscious consumerism.

According to them, “When our customers choose Residus, they’re making a conscious choice for a more sustainable and stylish future. Our products empower our customers to express their individuality while contributing to a greener, more ethical fashion industry”

In the fabric manufacturing process, an estimated 80% of the environmental strain of a garment comes from producing the fabric, Residus makes use of high quality leftover fabrics and materials for their creations to actively reduce industry waste and to reduce the ecological footprint of their products to the fairest minimum.

In their exact words, “For us, trying to make use of some of this leftover material was the foundation on which we founded Residus, and it is a fun way to create limited edition capsules for our customers while reducing the environmental impact of our brand.”

Their sustainability efforts do not stop there, they also use certified LENZINGTM ECOVEROTM fibers, which have fifty percent lower emissions and water usage compared to generic viscose, making it a great sustainable wardrobe choice.

They choose their partners solely based on their one hundred percent transparency and their commitment to financial, social and ethical responsibilities.

The brand is undeterred in its efforts to uphold the values they regard as important, that’s why they work hard to be a brand that our customers and other stakeholders can trust.

The fashion industry is slowly improving in terms of transparency and traceability, thanks to brands like Residus.
