ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE, A CENTURY OF SLOW FASHION

By: Janice Ronan

Ever evolving, the concept of made-to-order, slow fashion has materialized as a powerful antidote to the harmful practices and impact of fast fashion. Embracing personalized artisanship, ethical production, and reduced waste, slow fashion offers a more sustainable alternative that celebrates individuality and ensures garments are created with care and intention.

Beker Fashions, a global leader in luxury event wear takes centre stage as a prime example of a slow fashion brand with ethics, and inclusivity at the core of their ethos. Long before these concepts had their red-carpet moments, or garnered worldwide attention, the luxe brand was already modelling these principles. Unintentionally, they have pioneered what became a mainstream movement, laying the foundation for what we now recognize as slow and inclusive fashion.

The journey began with the late Sam Kaiman, who, at 16, immigrated from Poland to Toronto to better provide for his family back home. After mastering his cutting and sewing skills, while working in Toronto’s infamous Fashion District, Sam invited his brother to join him from Europe. Thus in 1923, the company was born. From its inception, the brand's commitment to size inclusivity was evident, crafting dresses and suits that catered to diverse body types without compromising on high-fashion aesthetics. In 1952, Abby Beker, a holocaust survivor from Lithuania, entered the picture when he married Sam's daughter, Simmie. Abby's charismatic leadership and sales acumen not only steered Beker Fashions towards success but also infused it with new life.

Today, Beker Fashions stands as a fourth-generation international enterprise, led by Ron Beker and his daughter, Kelly Beker, who serves as the Chief Brand Officer. As the brand evolved, its commitment to transparency and cultivating strong global relationships remained unwavering. As a key player in event dressing worldwide, Beker Fashions proudly presents a portfolio of luxury brands available in exclusive boutiques in Canada, the US, Mexico and beyond.

Prominent among these brands are FRASCARA (designed by Francesca Mammoliti and Cindy Fine), AUDREY + BROOKS, (designed by Francesca Mammoliti) and WAYNE CLARK – all proudly manufactured (made to order) at their Toronto, Canada studio, underscoring Beker Fashions' commitment to unrivaled quality, artisanship, and ethical production.

The family's dedication to the brand's international legacy is evident in their celebration of the company's centennial anniversary – a tribute to their enduring commitment and the contributions of their global workforce and partners. The highly anticipated celebration recently took place at the opulent Shangri-La Hotel.

Esteemed fashion icons from the past, who have helped shape the industry, joined forces with today's trailblazers, setting the stage for a captivating evening. From legendary designers who revolutionized style to influential models who have graced international catwalks, it was a gathering of fashion brilliance.

The runway was brought to life - featuring past signature styles, as well as highlights from their most recent collections - a range of beautiful designs that are both classic and contemporary. The stunning show was styled and choreographed by Creative Director and Stylist, Zeina Esmail and well received by the 300 plus guests.

Beker Fashions' unique legacy is further enriched by its global community of dedicated employees, many of whom have devoted decades to the brand's glamorous history. With 25, 30, and even 50-year badges of honor, they ensure that every dress, suit, and ensemble tell a story as rich as its textiles. With this kind of commitment, it is no wonder that Beker Fashions is known as the go-to for special occasions and red-carpet dressing for the most fashionable events.

Throughout its rich history, Beker Fashions has meticulously woven the threads of ethical consciousness, sustainable production, and size inclusivity into its company fabric. Evidence to the power of deliberate creation over fleeting trends. With every exquisite piece, the brand champions not only timeless style but also a profound respect for artistry and the environment - true leaders, who have embraced the elegance of mindful creation for generations to come.
